Frequently asked questions

How many sessions does my child need of play therapy?

The duration of play therapy is determined by a case to case basis, as each child and their needs are different. The play therapist will meet with parents every 4 to 6 weeks, to discuss play themes and how their child is going in therapy. Its also a great opportunity to share how your child has been going outside of the play room.
This all assists with determining the number of sessions for a child.

Does my child need to clean the play therapy room after a session?

Your child is not required to clean the play room once they have finished the session. This is essential for the therapeutic process for your child, as they worked on complex feelings and emotions, to clean it up afterwards can undo all the work they did in therapy.

Are my child sessions private or confidential?

Play therapy is private not secret. Your child can speak to whoever they like about what happened in the playroom but the therapist will be careful to respect the child's right to confidentiality. Though if the therapist has any concerns regarding the child's safety then this will not apply. Even though the therapist is not able to share details of your child's play, regular meetings will be held to update you on your child's progress and the themes that have been observed in play.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate on the sessions?

All sessions are charged as private sessions, and can not be claimed through Medicare or a Health Insurance provider. Though children with a NDIS plan are able to claim the sessions through their self-managed or plan-managed NDIS plan.
